Though the title mentions The Last
Nizam, it provides brief history of establishment of Hyderabad state & how the
Asaf Jahi dynasty has come into existence during the Mughals rule in India. John
has also captured brief account of events during the reign of each ruler from
Nizam-ul-Mulk, Mir Qamar-ud-din Khan (First Nizam) to Mir Osman Mir Ali Khan,
seventh & last Nizam who is credited for major developments in Hyderabad
state like building numerous public institutions, lakes etc. This section of
the book has helped me learn about history of Hyderabad during Nizams and
evoked interest for further reading on subject.
Book then shifts to the story of
Mukarram Jah, who was conferred title, eighth Nizam of Hyderabad and inherited
copious wealth after death of his grandfather, Mir Osman Ali Khan, labelled as richest
man in the world on the cover of Time magazine. Book offers peek into story of
Jah on how he turned out to be sheep farmer in half million acres Murchison House
Station in Australian outback where he lived his life riding military tanks, bulldozers
etc. I felt a sorrowful while reading how huge wealth has reduced when trust
was held in dishonest people.
One must appreciate the efforts of John for his enormous
effort in research which is quite evident in the book & also his style of
writing that holds readers interest throughout. Book is recommended for anyone
who wants to know about the Nizams of Hyderabad or read interesting tale of
riches to rags.
